Introduction to Surge Problems of Centrifugal Chillers
Surge is a unique fault phenomenon in centrifugal chillers. If the compressor exhaust volume significantly decreases during the operation of the refrigerator, and the condenser pressure is greater than the compressor exhaust pressure, causing instantaneous periodic gas reflux, accompanied by low noise and strong vibration, making the compressor operation extremely unstable, this phenomenon is called surge.
Generally speaking, there are the following reasons that may cause the centrifuge to surge:

1. The scaling of the condenser heat exchange tube leads to a decrease in heat exchange efficiency and an increase in condenser pressure;
2. Insufficient supply of cooling water or poor efficiency of cooling towers, resulting in excessively high return water temperature of cooling water;
3. The low evaporation temperature of the evaporator leads to low evaporation pressure, which is highly likely to occur when the load is too low;
4. Improper shutdown operation caused the high-pressure refrigerant vapor in the condenser to backflow. This problem is generally caused by the angle of the guide vanes.
5. There is excessive air in the refrigeration system, which can easily cause an increase in condensation temperature and pressure when air accumulates in the upper part of the condenser.
After accurately determining the cause of surge, targeted preventive and solving measures can be taken:
1. Regularly clean the heat exchange tubes and carry out water quality treatment to avoid scaling of the tubes;
2. When the cooling water flow rate is low, increase the cooling water supply. When the cooling water temperature is high, turn on the cooling tower fan to control
Cooling water return temperature;
3. When the load of the unit is low, manual intervention should be taken to stop the unit in advance to avoid low load operation;
4. Follow the process and shut down the guide vanes before shutting down the compressor;
5. The air entering the refrigeration system usually appears in the negative pressure unit (such as the Terling tertiary centrifuge), so it is necessary to regularly open the exhaust device for exhaust.
In practical work, it is necessary to regularly inspect and maintain the centrifuge to keep it in good condition and avoid the occurrence of surge as much as possible, in order to better protect the unit and ensure its optimal operation.
