The impact of non condensable gases on lithium bromide chillers
The stable operation of lithium bromide units requires extremely high vacuum degree. Once non condensable gases are mixed into the refrigeration unit, it will cause a sharp decrease in the refrigeration capacity of the lithium bromide unit and even result in the unit being unable to operate.
What is a non condensable gas? Non condensable gas refers to the gas that neither condenses nor is absorbed by the lithium bromide solution during the operation of the lithium bromide unit. We collectively refer to it as non condensable gas, such as oxygen, nitrogen, etc., as well as hydrogen gas generated by internal corrosion, all of which belong to non condensable gas.
Due to the fact that the lithium bromide absorption unit operates under high vacuum, the absolute working pressure in the evaporator and absorber is only a few hundred pascals. Therefore, when we vacuum the unit, it is very easy for external air to leak into the interior of the unit. Even if the unit is intact, with the continuous increase of operating time, lithium bromide solution will corrode other metal materials such as copper and iron inside the unit during operation, generating hydrogen gas. This type of non condensable gas, even in extremely small quantities, will have a significant impact on the performance of the unit.

Researchers have conducted experiments on the effect of nitrogen mass fraction on refrigeration capacity by charging nitrogen into lithium bromide units. Experimental results have shown that the refrigeration capacity of a unit with a standard refrigeration capacity of 2270KW decreases by nearly half after adding 30g of nitrogen. As the mass fraction of nitrogen accumulates, the vacuum of the experimental refrigeration unit is disrupted, resulting in a significant decrease in refrigeration capacity, crystallization, and even the inability of the refrigeration unit to operate normally.
The refrigeration principle of lithium bromide units is mainly achieved through continuous cycles of evaporation and absorption. The absorption process is a simultaneous process of heat and mass transfer. We all know that the greater the difference between the driving force transmitted (i.e. the vapor pressure of the evaporator and the vapor pressure of the absorber), the better the absorption effect of the unit. Assuming the presence of non condensable gas in the absorber, the vapor pressure of the evaporator remains constant. Under the action of non condensable gas inside the absorber, the water vapor pressure of the absorber increases, causing a decrease in the driving force transmitted, resulting in a decrease in absorption efficiency and a significant reduction in the refrigeration capacity of the unit.
Therefore, improving the sealing of the unit, preventing air leakage into the unit, and timely removing non condensable gases from the unit during operation to maintain a good vacuum state are the basic conditions to ensure the performance of the unit.
